The instructor at Southeast Tech is a spiteful little bully the bike are not being maintained and frankly the MSF course is more comprehensive than this. If you feel you want to take the motorcycle safety course go to Harley Davidson they maintain the bikes better. I've included the write up from my husband who is more mechanically knowledgeable than I am I feel you should know about issues I experienced first hand.
I won't talk about the instructor Chase Huntimer even though his power trip ego and hidden vengeance hinder student performance. Some of the motorcycles are unfit for experienced riders, let alone a new rider. My machine (#9116, a 2009 Kawasaki Eliminator) was extremely bad. The shifter required me to down shift with bottom of my heel. Upshift had to be done with side of heel while trying to keep toes from hitting the road.
The shift peg which rested below level, of foot peg had an extremely large amount of free play and needs a competent mechanic to replace shift star and adjust linkage. The rear brake pedal is bent in next to frame down tube making use impossible. I had to lift my foot, rotate almost 45° and step down hoping to hit it without hurting my knee from excessive twist.
The front wheel bearings squeal very loud. When mentioned to Chase he said "it just needs grease, nothing mechanical". Really?! The idle speed and throttle response seem to operate on the Ouiji Board concept, random and unpredictable Due to these factors and obvious signs of gross neglect I was given 12 points in the final skills testing. Granted that's a passing grade, but keep in mind I've been riding since the mid 80's and I am a 30+ year veteran in the automotive repair industry.
I've ridden and drove some real junk. If this motorcycle was my only means of transportation I would rather walk. I am going to have to ask you to look into the test results of other students of the class. Some failed even though I'd be happy to have them with me on a ride. Travis Harms, he was paying attention, doing all the skills very well and knows how to handle a larger motorcycle.
He was failed due to the instructors thinking he didn't look into the turns. That may be due to his body size and false perception of head turn amount. Taylor Brown even though she has never rode a motorcycle before and is new to the manual transmission concept did extremely good. Victoria Watts has been next to me on a few poker runs and countless leisure rides.
She has a learners permit and has been riding my Volusia 800, we are shopping for a bigger bike. The other students Emily and Timothy both made me scared, yet they passed.
